Pediatric Dentist appointment?

When do you take your child to the dentist? My daughter is 17 months old, when I asked my pediatrician, he said around 3, but my daughter already has almost all of her teeth and going all the way to 3 seems like a long time. When was the first time your child went to the dentist?
