Best shrub for the front of my house?

I'm trying to decide what kind of shrub to put in front of my house. I want something like a yew or boxwood that is relatively inexpensive and looks evergreen-ish (in other words, full looking, not like a barberry bush), but I have dense shade in front of my house. I have barberry bushes right now, which I absolutely hate. I want to take them out and put something else in.
